Would Greatly Appreciate Advice from System Admins Far More Experienced Than Myself
I have years of experience with working on physical hardware in small sized businesses. Running, exchange, managing AD, working with routing and remote access, working with DNS, etc. I do this usually for smaller businesses with around 25-75 users (my work has mainly been concentrated on SBS which I know Microsoft is giving the shaft).
So I have a fair amount of experience in what I would assume many would agree is on technology that is getting deprecated. What I mean by that is the world is going virtual and network based storage is becoming the standard. These are areas I think I am weak in.
So I am looking for some advice from fellow redditors that I know have tremendous experience in these areas.
I recently moved from being a on-call contractor for a quickly growing company to a staff member so that I can complete a number of goals, the two huge ones are:
- Disaster recovery that can be achieved the same business day (assuming the building burns down they want to be back up online within 24 hours).
- All data including emails on our exchange server must be archived for 7 years (assuming a daily snapshot).
The second issue I was hoping Backup Exec would help me with (since I have used it in the past for a number of clients), but recently their software and their support has turned to absolute crap. I have job logs showing that exchange backups took place but when I go to restore them to a test VM where I test the integrity of those backups only partial databases are available that are weeks old (when the job took place a day ago). Symantec is convinced I am doing something wrong despite showing them successful job logs and walking them through the process. So I am done with them (finally!).
I am going to post my assumptions on how to accomplish the above goals, I would love feedback on this.
First, for the recovery the same business day, vSphere Standard seems to be the way to with Veeam as the backup solution. I can do live migration to a backup server and if something happens simply power up the backup ESXi host, load up the guest (will be SBS 2011 in my case plus one SQL server) and be set.
Second, Veeam along with a NAS drive that can do offsite replication nightly should be able to backup exchange, shares, and SQL databases and keep all that data for 7 years using incremental backups.
My questions are this.
Is a one socket Veeam license enough? Do I also need to license the failover server?
Same with vSphere, will a standard vSphere server license be enough to do what I need and do I need that license for each ESXi host (the primary one and the backup one) or do I just need one license to cover both?
Will Veeam be capable of archiving data the way I want it to as long as I can keep storage requirements in line on the NAS drives?
Any other issues I should look out for?
Thank you so much to anyone that has read this through and anyone that might have advice for me, it’s greatly appreciated.
TLDR; How do I move in to the VM waters and how do I reliably archive data for 7 years.
Edit 1: I should provide more info on what I already have:
- 2 servers (the main production server and replication server)
- Windows Server 2012 to host vSphere Standard Server
- NAS appliances/drives
- vSpehere/Veeam licenses
VMware environment, considering switching to Hyper-V
We've looked at SANs in the past and my company just doesn't want to shell out the money for one. Whatever. I'm past that. We use Veeam Backup & Replication to replicate critical VMs between hosts, which is essentially as good as HA, FT, vMotion, Storage vMotion, etc, without the added licensing cost.
Anyway, to the point: Hyper-V w/ Server 2012 supports live migration between hosts that aren't using shared storage. This alone was reason enough for me to consider switching to Hyper-V. However, vSphere 5.1 will support this too. Here's the problem, though: Our blade systems are running the most recent version of ESXi. Our 3 standalone hosts are running 4.1. The reason for this is that they're using Adaptec RAID controllers that aren't supported fully with v5. By this I mean they'll work fine, but I can't manage the RAID controller at all. With ESX 4.1 I've installed the Adaptec management RPM and I can manage them just fine.
Hyper-V supports full management of the RAID controllers on those 3 systems. We own vSphere Essentials currently, which costs a wopping $90/year from VMware, so cost isn't a big issue here. With Hyper-V we'd have to purchase Windows 2012 for all the systems (I don't want to use the free version). We'd have the opportunity to purchase Datacenter edition and have "free" server VMs for the forseeable future. Plus, we could have live VM migration without any additional hardware purchases.
I guess my question is this: what are the caveats of switching from VMware to Hyper-V? I know we'll need to purchase System Center VMM 2012 SP1 to manage the hosts, which is pricey, by well worth it if it means we can add as many hosts as we want in the future without needing to purchase extra shared storage.
Ideally I'd buy a $20k SAN with all the needed redundancy, hook all my VMs up to that, and stick with VMware, only because I've dedicated 4+ years of my life to VMware and know it pretty darn well. Its pretty stable and effective. However, I work for accountants, and they fail to understand why the $20k investment in a proper SAN would be best, and I've lost the desire to fight for it.
Ok, lots of info and half-questions in this post. Sorry for that. Any input would be appreciated!
