The Complete Melee "HD" & Netplay Guide

To this day, I still think a lot of people are unaware of the power of Dolphin and its netplay & graphics capabilities.
I've put together a complete guide on how you can play Super Smash Brothers Melee online with HD textures, against people hundreds of miles away, with the same input accuracy as offline play using Faster Melee (a modified Dolphin) and Dolphin's native GameCube controller support.

1. Essential items (new players)

So some of you may be new to Melee. No problem. The first 2 things you'll need is a GameCube controller and an adapter so you can play Melee on PC, just like you can on your console.
For controllers, you have 2 options:
Original GameCube Controller (eBay UK | US)
Production of these controllers discontinued in early 2012. Smashboards has a complete list of every original controller variation.
Super Smash Bros. Edition GameCube Controller (eBay UK | US)
Production of these controllers stopped as recently as April 2017. This controller comes in 2 variations; a black and a white model.
Generally you want to look for barely used second hand controllers. You can also find sellers who have new/unused ones for an increase in price.
There are minute differences between variations and models of controllers. Both will work absolutely fine for playing Melee on console and on PC.
If you want the best experience, we highly recommend you don't deviate from using officially produced GameCube controllers. 3rd party controllers may have inconsistencies and poor design quality.
For adapters, you also have 2 options:
Nintendo Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter (Amazon UK | US)
Official. Prices tend to fluctuate a lot with this adapter.
Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter (Amazon UK | US)
Unofficial, yet this adapter works just as well as the official one. It also has a "PC" mode switch to allow other games (like Rivals of Aether) to support it as a valid input device. This feature is absent on the official adapter, and will require additional software. Usually, this adapter is the cheaper one of the two.
optional (other input devices)
Dolphin does support a huge variety of input devices, so you can play with whatever you want. This said, Dolphin only has native support for GameCube controllers with either of these two adapters. Any other input device will require configuration within the client, and will not be lagless or as accurate. Step 6. on this guide shows you how to configure any adapter or controller that Dolphin doesn't support natively. Skip the next section if this applies to you, and begin reading about ISOs; we will be installing Dolphin shortly.

2. Getting set up (first time Dolphin users/netplayers)

So you've got your controller and adapter and you're ready to go. Great! The first thing you need to do is to set up your adapter to work with your PC. Follow the 3 instructions under "Using Zadig" in the below guide.
If you're using the Mayflash 4 port adapter, switch to "Wii U" mode for anything Dolphin related otherwise your controller wont work!
How to use the Official GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U in Dolphin (also works for Mayflash 4 port).
Now that your adapter is set up, you will need to get an ISO (game file) of Melee. Having your own ISO is legal as long as you own a physical copy of the game. However due to the rules, you will have to acquire your own. The version you need is "Super Smash Bros. Melee (v1.02)". You want the "NTSC" version no matter where you are from. If you are from Europe and want to play the PAL version, please read the section below.
optional (Community Netplay Builds)
Now you have your base ISO. Sometimes you will find players who like to play on the "Community build" of that ISO. We recommend you download and use your respective version from Smashboards. For European players, you will want to setup the PAL version of the Netplay Community Build. You will find a lot of players ask for it, as the Vanilla PAL Melee ISO is not properly supported for netplay.
Now it's time to download the program which runs the ISO; Dolphin.
For offline play, we recommend you head over to Dolphin's Website and download their latest stable version. This will have the latest innovations and optimisations from the Dolphin team for you to enjoy local play.
For online (netplay) the best place to start is this guide on Anther's Ladder. Anther's ladder is the home of Smash Bros. netplay, and players from all around the world go there to find opponents. The guides on this page will show you how to setup Melee with Faster Melee (Dolphin), and how to matchmake with other players. (Account is required). Make sure you don't miss the guide for setting up netplay.
Anther's Ladder sometimes delays updating their guides and recommended builds. If you want to get Faster Melee direct from the developers, head over to Faster Melee's website. They have guides and the most up to date versions there, although it may not be the most widely played version at that point in time.
optional (netplay discords)
Some states/countries branch off from here and create their own netplay communities, using different versions of Faster Melee/Dolphin to that on Anther's Ladder. You can go to Smashcords to see if there are any active Discords (possibly with a netplay community) for your location.
optional (Mac users)

optional (getting CRT-like input delay)
Dolphin (Faster Melee)'s netplay allows you to set "Buffer". Higher buffer = more input lag. The less input lag a display has, the higher you set the buffer to compensate for its speeds; you are attempting to match a CRT's input lag by setting this value.
Many players will launch a solo netplay session (usually in Faster Melee), to take advantage of this. Example:
A monitor has a low response time (1ms) and and a high refresh rate (144Hz+). The buffer value should be increased (8) to compensate for this monitors fast speeds. This achieves CRT-like accuracy that you wouldn't get by playing offline (launching directly into the ISO) with regular Dolphin or Faster Melee, as this will have 0 input buffer. (Which will have less input lag than a CRT in this example, which isn't desirable for tournament goers).
For Faster Melee netplay with others, the buffer value = ping/8. Using the previous example, the value should be be increased (8) to compensate for your monitors fast speeds, as long as the ping is 64 or below. Your opponent may want the buffer set lower (if the ping allows it), as they may not have a high end monitor like the above example.
u/KukBoi69 made a guide to maximize your Netplay Experience. This details the correct buffer values based on various common monitor specifications.
If you are not adamant about your Melee on PC being exactly like a CRT, just stick to using the latest stable version of Dolphin for offline, and Faster Melee netplay for online.
optional (regular Dolphin users only)
Faster Melee (5.0+) will automatically prioritise your netplay packets to minimise lag. If your PC isn't capable of running Faster Melee and you are using regular Dolphin for netplay instead, you can still set this manually using this guide on Imgur.
If you need to download Group Policy Manager, the link on the above guide is broken. I used the download link on this page (itechtics.com) and it's worked flawlessly.

3. Melee HD (yes, it exists)

So. Maybe you've played a few games on netplay or by yourself. Now I'm about to show you how you can take it to the next level with no performance impact. You are simply replacing the textures in the game.
u/solidturnip posted (with very little attention :c) a (mostly) complete Melee HD texture pack for Dolphin w/ guide.
The above pack consists of all the textures from this post on Smashboards. If you want to update the textures as they come, keep track of this.
These can be used on all versions of the game, and will work with any version of Dolphin or Faster Melee, and on netplay as well.
  1. Open Faster Melee or Dolphin.
  2. Make a note of the Game ID's you want to apply the HD textures to. Example
  3. With the file downloaded, go into wherever you placed your Dolphin/Faster Melee folder. (For regular Dolphin, your install directory would have been your Documents).
  4. Once it is open, go to "User" > "Load" > "Textures". Place the GALE01 Folder here.
  5. If GALE01 is the only ID you needed, you're golden. If you have more versions of Melee with different IDs, copy and/or rename the GALE01 folder to match the IDs. Example
  6. As you can see, I want HD textures on all versions of my Melee, so I copied and renamed the folder twice.
  7. Finally, select graphics. Go to the "Advanced" tab and check "Load Custom Textures" and "Prefetch Custom Textures". This will load your HD textures when the emulation starts.
optional (but your Melee will look AMAZING)
So as well as the texture pack, Dolphin has a ton of graphics options you can crank up. By changing these you will see the game starts looking amazing. Seriously, try it. You're going to be blown away by how good this game can look. This said, there may be a considerable performance impact if your PC isn't powerful enough.
Now usually I'd send you off to follow some guide someone else has made. But amazingly it seems there isn't really a good guide for this. So let me be the guy to show you can you can activate High-Definition Melee.
Open Dolphin and select graphics.
  1. Change your "Backend:" to "Direct3D11". It is the standard for pretty much all games at the moment.
  2. Change your "Adapter:" to your most powerful graphics card. If there is any mention of "NVIDIA" or "AMD" here, choose it, as the chances are it's more powerful than your on-board GPU. If not, leave it as Intel/AMD.
  3. Change your "Fullscreen resolution:" to your monitors resolution. If you don't know your monitors resolution, right click your desktop > Display settings > Advanced display settings. Your resolution will be displayed here.
  4. Make sure you do not enable V-Sync. It is notorious for increasing input lag in games.
  5. All other options in this tab are self explanatory, check them if you want them.
  6. Go to the "Enhancements" tab. "Internal Resolution", "Anti-Aliasing" and "Anisotropic Filtering" will all make your game look great at the cost of a lot of performance. You also have the option for "Widescreen Hack", which will allow you to use widescreen (16:9) on netplay without desyncing others.
Please DO NOT continue using high graphical settings on netplay if your PC isn't strong enough. It causes lag during matches which is a cause of frustration for players. Start off low, and slowly move up until you notice any stuttering.

4. Additional notes

To anyone having trouble allowing people to connect to them; you might need to port forward. A prime example is for people in the UK who are on Virgin Media. You will need to do this to have people connect to you on the Traversal server.
The port you will want to forward by default is "2626". If your router allows it, forward the port on both TCP&UDP. There still seems to be inconsistencies with connecting on netplay, so apologies if this does not work for you.
Alternatively to port forwarding, you can host Direct instead of Traversal. This is done by simply changing from Traversal to Direct after you go to "Tools" > "Start Netplay". If you do do this, you will need to provide the person you're playing with your IP address instead of a host code. Just type into google "my ip" and it will tell you.

Port Forwarding guide: if no one is able to connect to you via Traversal.
UK Melee Netplay Group: the primary place for UK netplay.
