never sidechain your bass again
I spent last night creating up an empty project template to cut down on time spent setting up a new project. Like many FL users, I primary make beats/dance music. I think most electronic-music projects have similar workflows/organization, so I thought I should have the groundwork in place every time I open FL. One important thing I did was sidechain a bass. I don't know how many times I've set up a sidechain. hundreds- thousands, easily. Sure it only takes 10 seconds to set up (not including mixing), but that time starts adding up. Then you've got to build a kit, name each track, color-code tracks, route tracks, create sub-mixes. maybe go ahead put a limiter on the master, etc. These little "chores" really have nothing to do with the music and If you've got them already knocked-out every time you begin a new project, then you can spend your time actually focusing on the song.
I built a super-basic drumkit. I picked a kick, snare, ride, hat, a click, and a shaker. all the samples are extremely ordinary, just to get an idea. I will almost always end up replacing/adding more as I begin working. The kick and snare have their own submix and in that submix, I also added a short sub-sine pulse to layer over the kick/snare. It serves as not only a little 'beef' to the kick/snare, but as a 'better' sidechain. Because it's a short pulse, the sidechaining can be shorter than kick or snare (if need be). sometimes a long, sustaining snare just ducks the bass a little too long. I found this to be a very flexible solution. The sidechain compressor is on a soft-square/almost sine wav that serves as a pretty basic sub. The only other synths are a square wave to be turned into a lead, and another to be turned into a pad.
Thats about it. basic drumkit, basic synths, some routing, a limiter at the end of the master just to keep anything from accidentally clipping. I named and color-coded everything, but kept it all very basic. All together it could have taken me 10 minutes to set this up, but now I have it ready everytime I open FL. (I replaced "Empty.flp" in 'C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio 10\Data\System')
This is obviously not for everybody nor will I use it for every last project, but for me, these are things I have going on about 99% of the time. they really have nothing to do with the song itself, just how you go about making the song.
Open letter to Image Line: FL Needs A Studio Mode.
I don't mean Studio Mode as in the studio/professional/etc. editions of FL that change what VSTs and plugins come with it. I mean a mode in which FL runs more like industry standard DAWs in how it treats tracks/patterns/mixer channels/etc. "Track Mode" half addressed this, but we'll get to that later. This should be an option that is enabled by default, can be toggled in the menu, and is remembered like how templates are.
FL often gets a bad rap for being unprofessional in the sense that it is rarely considered one of the industry standards and is often thought of as only having non-professionals as their user base (with a few exceptions). This is exasperated by how often you see pictures of projects that are very cluttered and unorganised. Everyone works differently and has a different flow. However, in FL Studio, it takes far more effort to have everything labeled, colour-coded, and placed in their respective tracks/mixer slots/sub-tracks than it does to just leave things unorganised.
Track Mode, which FL added relatively recently, began to address this but only half-way. Dragging a VST onto a track does automatically put it on the mixer and automation does automatically get grouped under the instrument's track. However, patterns and samples are left out of this, leaving extra organisational work to be done that takes lots of time and ruins a work-flow. It's no wonder many people opt to not name or colour-code anything at all.
Here's what I propose:
FL Studio have a "Sandbox Mode" and a "Studio Mode."
Sandbox means you can place anything anywhere on your arrangement (playlist), name your instrument and it's mixer channel different names if you please, do whatever you like. Aka exactly what you have with FL now.
Studio Mode means that your instruments, samples, patterns, mixer channels, etc. are all synced like in most DAWs.
- Instrument/Sample 1 = Track 1 = Pattern 1
Another example is if you drag in a kick but you want to make a copy of it to use as a sidechain trigger, you should be able to duplicate the sample in the Picker Panel (more on this below) or on the track in the arrangement that it's assigned to. So if the kick is assigned to Track 10 using Track Mode, you should be able to right-click Track 10 and duplicate it, resulting in a new instance of that sample which then has its own track, mixer channel, etc. (think - "insert one" option when right-clicking on a track in your playlist).
As already exists in Track Mode, Automation would become a sub-track or be collapsible beneath the track/instrument/channel that it's effecting. However, it would share the colour of the parent track by default but could be changed in order to tell automation apart easily when there are multiple automations for one track.
- The Picker Panel should have a tab for the channel rack (aka your instruments/VSTs) and the Step Sequencer should be its own thing
- Patterns should be optional
But more importantly, this would mean that each non-connected/consolidated Piano Roll within a Track on your arrangement is able to be unique (this is how most DAWs do it). So without Patterns enabled, you can duplicate a Piano Roll within a Track and adjust the second one without adjusting the original (perhaps a keyboard shortcut could toggle whether or not your change effects all sections of the piano roll, which would be a great feature many other DAWs don't have). This would mean you don't have to make a unique Pattern for every small change and have 10 different Patterns playing on the same Instrument/Channel.
- Custom colour choices should be re-vamped
Currently, the default shows a range of colours that repeats in 5 "bars" with each bar's range of colours getting dimmer.
Each of those "bars" should instead have a range of one colour each such as blue/green/red/yellow/black-white. So bar 1 would have blue that ranges from vibrant bright to vibrant dark like the custom colours as well as more faded choices, Bar 2 would have green, 3 would have red, etc.
This would make it much easier to have all synths blue, all samples green, all vocals yellow, all FX grey scale, etc with varied values of the same colour that you choose.
I'm sure there are more things such as adopting busses in a manner such as Logic or Bitwig, but I think these that I stated are a good start.
FL Studio is fantastic and its ease of use, its intuitive piano roll, its intuitive tools and tool mapping, etc. all make the DAW great. But there is a reason many industry professionals opt for other DAWs and I believe these are some of those core reasons.
I think Image Line would even find that many current and future users would be willing to pay an extra fee (outside of which Edition they choose) in order to have these options.
I love this DAW but as I work on music semi-professionally, I often find myself questioning whether or not FL's benefits in midi and sample editing, tools, etc. are worth the large amounts of effort it takes to keep large projects organised and causing your workflow to suffer.
Cheers!
Those who wish to support the idea on the IL Forum can do so here!
edit because I think some people are misunderstanding:
These ideas would be a version or mode that you can choose. It would have literally zero effect on your ability to use FL how you currently do.
Edit again: Another lovely idea that could be added, thanks to u/afrokat , is groups within groups on the arrangement! That way your claps can be grouped together within the drums group.
Another idea thanks to u/Fairlight2cx - add actual comping between tracks, and ARA2 support for Melodyne.
